Alfie Moore – A Face for Radio

Date: 14th September 2024
Time: Doors open 7pm
Location: Lydney Town Hall
Comedian

Somewhere in a parallel universe little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history.

Meanwhile, in this universe Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police.

Thirty years of shift-work, initially in the Sheffield steelworks and then as a copper on the beat (where he was punched in the face quite a lot), has left him with ‘a face for radio’.  A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair.

In his 40s a surprising career shift turned middle-aged Alfie from street cop to BBC radio star. But when TV fame beckoned could he grasp it or was he past it?

“…offbeat, revealing and very funny” You Magazine

“…thoroughly engaging, endlessly funny. His charisma shines through as bright and colourful as a twirling blue light. Mature Times

Tickets £18 – available from the town hall box office.

John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett

Date: 21st September 2024
Time: Doors open 7pm
Location: Lydney Town Hall

If you’ve seen them, you’ll never forget them and if you haven’t seen them, then you MUST!

Fresh from their 2023 “Half A Sentry” tour, they return to Lydney Town Hall on their journey towards 60 years of playing for your amusement and amazement. Last year was a sell-out and we’re sure the madcap duo will fill the room again with their unique brand of (sort of) music.

It was 1973 when they first got together (since then they’ve regrouped, fallen out and split more times than curdled sauce) and 1977 when they had their one and only hit, Really Free. Inspired by its chart success, Otway thought he’d made it as a pop star, whilst Barrett remained the eternal musical enigma. A medically disastrous appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test (see YouTube) cemented their image as Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure and they’ve built on it ever since.

Audiences should be prepared for everything from bare-chested theremin playing to wah wah wheelie bin as the duo jump from one hit and 40 near misses to another.

The perpetually optimistic, excitable Otway is counterpointed by Willy Barrett’s dry wit and sarcasm, not to mention his amazing multi-instrumentalism and talent for destroying instruments.

‘I think he’s genuinely fascinated by what I do’ says Otway of Willy ‘but totally horrified at the damage it does to his reputation as a musician’. Willy counters ‘I do rather find that performing alongside his imbecilic antics distracts from the music I play. I’m a little bit more tolerant of him now, so I’m not quite as violent with him as in the early days’.

Older but no wiser, the contrast between the dead pan humour of Barrett and mad onstage antics of Otway are hilarious to watch. John’s lyrical genius and Willy’s outstanding musicianship continue to entertain. Let’s hope they don’t fall out. On second thoughts let’s hope they do, it’s far more fun.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see a total unique and eccentric semi-musical experience! Hear Otway’s life story … marvel at Willy’s dexterity… laugh at Otway’s Joke… wear protective clothing… and Enjoy Yourselves!
Tickets available now at only £18 (£20 on the door) from the town hall box office.

The FOD Band`s qualities were recognised by Tony Jackson, the original lead singer of The Searchers, who selected them to be The Tony Jackson Group and to back him on his Tony Jackson sings The Searchers Shows. One of the biggest highlights of those days was when the guys backed Tony in front of 80,000 people who filled the street in front of a big stage erected just beside Mathew Street where the Cavern Club in Liverpool stands and where The Searchers and The Hollies appeared early in their musical careers.

This tribute show is packed with hits including Sweets for my sweet, When you walk in the room, Sugar & Spice, Needles & pins, Goodbye my love, Stay, I can`t let go, He ain’t heavy he`s my brother, Air that I breathe, Just one look, Yes I will and many more.

Soul Destroyers

Date: 31st December 2024
Time: Doors open 7pm
Location: Lydney Town Hall

Specially for our new years concert of 2024/25 – the mighty Soul Destroyers are more of a tribe than a band, and have been playing their mix of cheese tinged, horn driven soul since Adam was a lad – the line up has come and gone, some have drifted into the sunset, some have died, and some have (genuinely) been born, grown up and then joined the band!
A 13 piece line up, with 6 awesome horns, 3 singers and a rock solid rhythm section it is an unnatural phenomenon of truly awe-inspiring musical power.
But the music is only part of the story, think Marvin, Aretha and James Brown all jamming under the influence of laughing gas – all fronted by a stand up comedian with a rasping soul voice and the comedy timing of Peter Kay and you are getting close to full The Soul Destroyers Experience.

“The Soul Destroyers have an arsenal of secret weapons; a bellowing, charismatic lead singer-cum- stand-up comic, female backing singers who behave like devils and sing like angels, a rock-solid rhythm section and a 6 piece horn section that packs more brass than Lilly Savage.”
(Andy Stead – Gloucester Guildhall Arts Centre)
Tickets £28 – available from the Town Hall ticket office.
